A Personal Reflection
The idea for these candles grew from my own experiences of missing someone special or knowing someone else was going through grief and not knowing what to do - not only in the intial days of loss, but in all the ‘firsts’ and bittersweet celebrations that come in the years after. Life goes on, but there is a void, and often a silence, that is present in enduring loss.
I spent years trying to ‘manage’ the feelings and the loss - overcompensating in the celebrations (Taylor Swift said this well, “I’m so depressed I act like it’s my birthday, everyday” ) to emotional austerity where I minimised all feelings and took a ‘business as usual’ approach to the special days of life. Neither way really worked and both ways left me stuck in the shadows.
As I got wiser, I've found comfort in having a small ritual for these moments and lighting a candle has become part of that ritual. There is something symbolic about watching a flame flicker, and recognising the beauty, tangibility and transience of life and loss, and knowing the love that holds us bound through space and time.
I have also found comfort in being able to gift a candle to someone who is grieving. Grief is personal and each person walks the path feeling alone. There is no more helpless feeling that watching someone we love going through a hard time and knowing we can’t fix it. I have found connection in giving a candle because a candle says, “I remember. I see you. I love you.”
My hope is that these candles might offer others a little of that same comfort, in whatever way feels meaningful to them.
